Dr. Meltzer received his medical degree with honors at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington DC, and trained in Pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA. After fellowship training in immunology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Meltzer joined the staff of the National Cancer Institute to conduct research on immune responses to cancer and infectious disease. Dermatology training was at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington DC where Dr. Meltzer remained on hospital staff as the U.S. Army equivalent to university full professor and continued research on infectious disease (with focus on HIV and AIDS) and defense against biological warfare as Chief, Department of Cellular Immunology, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
He has authored more than 250 medical articles, was elected to editorial boards of several scientific journals, and served as scientific advisor to the American Cancer Society. Dr. Meltzer also served as member of scientific advisory boards in several pharmaceutical companies.
The Institute for Scientific Information named Dr. Meltzer as one of the most highly cited researchers in immunology in the world in 2004. After retirement from the U.S. Army as full colonel, Dr. Meltzer became director of dermatology at the Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, MD and Dermatology Consultant to the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Meltzer is also on faculty of the department of dermatology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. He is cited as “Top Doctor” Dermatology, Baltimore Magazine November 2017.
